I have for a long time loved Alfred Wallis’s naïve paintings of little ships, houses and seascapes and a visit to Kettles Yard where many of his works are held rekindled my interest. For this course I will supply a muddy palette of fabrics ( some hand painted) which fit in with his aesthetic and we will use these to build up a collage based on his paintings. I will provide ideas in terms of drawings and the idea is to capture the “spirit” of this fisherman painter through applique and stitch.

portrait of a place Sunday 8th March 10-4 at the hearth £65 incl materials FULL

Picture
Working on to a piece of old  table linen or a handkerchief you will create a portrait of your own home or a building which is important to you. It might be the house where you were born, a holiday home or somewhere you regularly visit and love. Even a caravan! Working from a photograph I will show you how to make an accurate representation and to use stitch as a drawing tool to create an evocative piece. You will use small amounts of applique to contextualise and give further detailing.
Please note this is NOT a landscape course it is a portrait of a building, part of a building

gorgeous nothings Sun 19 april 10-4 at the hearth £65 incl materials FULL

Picture
A precious little book which is inspired by a line from a poem by Emily Dickinson. You will use paper and textile collage techniques which marry together a few words from Emily, small precious fabric collages, found embroidery, special papers and other paper ephemera. There will be a bit of sticking, a bit of stitching, maybe patchwork and you will of course be shown how to sew the book together to create your special little keepsake of gorgeous nothings.
You must provide your own glue stick

Blue meditation scroll Sunday 7th June 10-4 at the hearth £65 incl all materials full

This course is all about slow stitching, being able to pick up a project and really be in the flow.
You will be provided with a length of indigo dyed linen which will provide the basis for a daily ( I hope) stitch diary through out the summer where you really stretch the pattern making potential of embroidery stitches. Your stitches will fit in to and cross small patches of beautiful hand block printed blue fabrics which I have sourced for you from Merchant and Mills and Cloth House London. You will use these sparingly as the stitching is the main  mission but you will be encouraged to not just applique them but also use them for a reverse applique technique. You may think you know lots of embroidery stitches but hopefully I will be able to introduce you to a few more and new ways of using them.

Fishing lass  sunday 12th july 10-4 at the hearth £65 incl materials FULL

Picture
Fishing lasses worked up and down the coasts of Great Britain for two centuries. Gutting, preparing, sorting and selling fish they would have been a common sight in the harbour when the boats came in.. Now when you google “Fishing Lass”: it seems they are largely forgotten though in the north east  photographs and songs record the important role these women performed in providing food for us to eat. This is an applique and stitch course that celebrates those strong lasses. Mine references the local Cullercoats fish lasses who even attracted the attention of the famous American painter Winslow Homer. I will provide a variety of fabrics so yours can be dressed according to taste and you will work on to the base of a faded quilt top.
