Send Mandy an image and she will transfer it on to fabric for you and show you how to use it effectively within a textile collage. The image might be a favourite postcard, from a book or a family photograph.You will learn how to use fabrics intuitively, might even combine your fabrics with paper ephemera and will learn about embellishment and stitch. A sewing machine will be available for you to learn machine embroidery techniques to further decorate the surface of your work.

Precious Memories
at Burnbrae Workshop, Kelso
Thursday 18th & Friday 19th April
10am- 4pm
£100 for both days
Mix fabric, paper items, stitch and embellishment to create collaged pictures or a small wallhanging which bring back the memories. Your old family photographs will be transferred on to fabric and we will use textile collage techniques including hand and machine embroidery, bonding and surface decoration to create a contemporary heirloom. You will also learn compositional skills, about colour, the qualities of fabric and how to attach them, presentation skills and be encouraged to recycle old sentimental bits and pieces that you can't bear to throw away. Stitches will be demonstrated so that you can use them to effectively embellish your work. You will have the opportunity to rummage in Mandy's precious vintage bits and pieces basket and you could even incorporate old jewellery, old haberdashery and trims to make this a truly personal piece with emotional resonance

Stitched Drawings - a contemporary embroidery course

Stitch is usually used to embellish or decorate but in this course you will use it to build up a line drawing with a more contemporary feel . You will learn to subtly add sheer fabrics such as organza and chiffon to to create tone and contour. Animals and birds are the ideal subject matter for this technique but Mandy will also show you examples of stitched portraits that she has built up from careful observation of family photographs or fashion drawings. Tracing will be allowed so don't worry if you can't draw
